Background

The purpose of the YACSA eBulletin is to communicate with its members information regarding youth issues, information and events of relevance to the youth sector, and youth participation opportunities.

In July 2007 the function and frequency of the eBulletin was one of the subjects of a members’ survey, with the majority of responses indicating that members would prefer to receive the eBulletin on a less frequent basis. As a result of this feedback, the eBulletin will be produced fortnightly and sent each Tuesday fortnight, except over the Christmas/New Year break when it will not be distributed.

Editorial Policy

Editorial policy is concerned with content and style. It is concerned with which items are carried in the eBulletin and how they are presented. Editorial policy extends to the form of distribution. All group emails are sent using the BCC field to ensure privacy.

The contents need to reflect interests of YACSA, issues of the day and issues directly relevant to the members and the sector.

Promoting YACSA events and resources is always a priority. Items from members and non-government organisations take priority over those from non-members. Items advertising positions vacant are only to be accepted by organisations offering positions to young people or in the youth sector.

The sorts of items carried include: the summary of a YACSA submission, promotion of a YACSA event, pieces on conferences such as calls for papers or early bird registrations, items on youth events, new or changed resources, calls for submissions and sector development items. As more items are generally put forward for the eBulletin than can be carried, decisions will be made by the editor regarding the final selection for each issue.

Priority is given to the balance of each fortnightly edition. Promoting a topical issue will take priority over advance promotion for a workshop. Relevance matters, a call for papers for a national youth conference is more relevant than promoting a state-based youth conference in Tasmania.

The eBulletin is most unlikely to carry items such as AGM promotions, fundraising promotions and commercial training courses (unless they are very cheap).

Listing items only once is the norm. Consecutive issues of the eBulletin will not be used to continually promote a workshop, for example.

As with all media placement, the easier it is for the editor to incorporate, the more likely it is that your item will be included. While the editor does edit items, rewriting pdf documents does not always happen and submissions by pdf may not make it into the eBulletin. Images may be used to highlight the lead articles but are used sparingly in the remainder of the eBulletin to keep the size of the document as small as possible. No attachments are sent with the eBulletin
