Consult on school yard designs with the University of Canberra.

University of Canberra are running some consultations with young people about schoolyard designs. Below is info about three workshops they have planed for 24 July.

  1. Belonging and identity in the schoolyard (9:30 - 12pm) aimed at a range of perspectives including First Nations, LGBTQIA+, FLO / tailored learning and others, bullying experts, neurodiversity etc  

  2. Re-designing schoolyards (1pm - 3:30pm) bringing together under 25s, landscape architects and educators to develop design better schoolyards

  3. Schoolyards for me focus group (4pm - 6pm) any current high school students to seek their reflections on high school design.

 

Workshop 1: Belonging in the schoolyard

Think schoolyards should be spaces where everyone feels they belong? Got ideas to make them more fun, safe and free from bullying? We want to hear from you!

The University of Canberra is conducting research to redesign schoolyards so they work better for high school students.

Schoolyards should feel safe, fun and inclusive - for everyone. If you're 25 or under join us for a creative workshop to help redesign school spaces that truly belong to all.

Workshop 2: Redesigning schoolyards

Tired of schoolyards that are more 'meh' than 'yeah'? Then we want to hear from you! 

The University of Canberra is conducting research to redesign schoolyards so they work better for high school students. We want your real-life experience, ideas and insights at a fun, hands-on workshop.

Date: 24 July 2025

Time: 1pm - 3:30pm

Location: Education Development Centre, 4 Milner St, Hindmarsh SA 5007

You’ll earn a $100 gift card and collaborate with other young people and professionals to improve schoolyards on topics such as:

  • How do we design small spaces without creating opportunities for bullying?

  • What does a good hangout spot actually look like?

  • How do we let students still have fun without it feeling like you're back in Year 3?

  • How do we make sure everyone gets a fair go - no matter who they are or what they're into?

  • What even is play in high school?

Focus Group: Schoolyards for me

Are you a current high school student? Tired of schoolyards that are more 'meh' than 'yeah'? Then we want to hear from you! 

The University of Canberra is conducting research to redesign schoolyards so they work better for high school students. Join a youth run session of like-minded high school students to tell us how to improve schoolyards.

 You’ll earn a $100 gift card to contribute your thoughts on:

  • What’s it really like in schoolyards today?

  • What do you think adults misunderstand about schoolyards?

  • How would you improve them?
